Madrid's best rooftop terrazas that rise above the rest

Mercado-San-Anton3MADRID'S ROOFTOPS
A few of the best sky-high spots to sip, dine and soak up the sun

As the Madrid mercury rises, so do its terrazas—the city rooftops, to be exact. So when visiting the Spanish capital, here’s your list of top spots to check out for a good drink, dinner, or day in the sun.

For a swanky cocktail

Madrid knows how to serve up a pretty spectacular cocktail, so to up the fancy factor you have several rooftop options. Head to the terraza-filled Plaza de Santa Ana, where you'll find the ME Hotel’s posh, and occasionally tourist-filled, The Roof. For a slightly more mellow vibe, travel down the street to the Urban Hotel, where you can still enjoy stellar views, but without as much of a crowd. Madrid-The-ROOF-terraza

For a gastronomical feast

Enjoy some of the best cuisine Madrid has to offer by treating your test buds to a molecular al fresco meal at the two-Michelin-star-rated Casino de Madrid. The rooftop restaurant features foodie masterpieces by Ferrán Adria disciple Paco Roncero. Between the views and the multi-course meal, few terraza experiences can top this one.casinodemadrid 01

For tapas and shopping

One of Spain’s newest and most fashionable terrazas rises out of the gay-friendly Chueca district, atop the recently refurbished Mercado de San Antón. To get there, you’ll pass through two market floors filled with fresh fare ranging from fish, to veggies and made-to-order croquetas. Tapas hop below, then head up for a drink, or stick around for a fancier meal in the rooftop restaurant.Mercado-San-Anton

For pool time

Pools in the city center might be about as easy to come by as an open grocery store on Sunday, but one rooftop terraza has your sunbathing hookup; Hotel Oscar. The swimming area may be about the size of a kiddie play-pool, but the views and cushy sunbathing beds more than make up for the lack of laps you’ll be doing. Chill out with a drink at the bar while soaking up the sun and sights. MG 9122
