BEAUTY BLOG CCLAREBEAR
A guide to beauty, tattoos for the wild side and mouth watering culinary hot spots. We talk to beauty afficionados Catharine and Clare.
Somewhere between London and Sydney, we catch up with sister duo Claire and Catharine, half-Indonesian, half-Aussie, who give us the inside tour of what's a hit or miss in their hood. With a discerning eye for beauty they review and discuss products on their beauty blog. Join us for a little tour through their neighbourhood as they reveal their top beauty destinations and favourite culinary delights in town.
WHAT DO YOU LOOK FOR WHEN YOU VISIT A BEAUTY SALON
CLARE: My favourite beauty salons have always been filled with people with good style—interesting clothes, tattoos, and amazing hair. I'm also a sucker for incredible interior design too. I'm a really visual person!
CATHARINE: Prices that are reasonable and more importantly, justified.
THE BEST BEAUTY SALONS/HOT SPOTS IN YOUR CITY
CLARE: When I lived in Sydney, my hairdresser was Empire Hair in Darlinghurst who are amazing. Here in London, I go to Miou Miou in Deptford who is run by a gorgeous Japanese woman. I'm yet to find an eyebrow, nail or beauty salon that I love in London so far... Oh, and the best tattoo place in Sydney is Inner Vision in Surry Hills—head there on a Saturday morning for the walk-ins.
CATHARINE: Stevie English Hair in Glebe and Bondi—they are really amazing hair stylists and colourists. They use beautiful products and the staff are really friendly and funny. Marrickville Markets in Marrickville are my favourite place in Sydney to spend a Sunday morning. Great food, great chai, great atmosphere.
WHICH UNIQUE LOCAL BEAUTY OR FASHION BRANDS DO YOU FANCY?
CATHARINE: Aesop—beautiful products and each store is individual and beautifully designed. Rae Morris makes incredible makeup brushes.
CLARE: Rae Morris is really amazing! In London, I love MuLondon for my moisturisers, SteamCream rescued my legs after winter and looks gorgeous on my dresser, and Illamasqua are an amazing UK british makeup brand that have gone global—their products are so pigmented! Fred Farrugia at Sephora in Paris are a recent find—I have a few sets of eyeshadows and I don't travel without them now. For clothes… I shop at ASOS almost exclusively since I'm so time-poor now! Love the free returns and there's so much variety.
DRINK & DINE IN STYLE
CATHARINE: Grasshopper, Shady Pines, Long Grain in Surry Hills, The Teahouse at White Rabbit Gallery in Chippendale
CLARE: The Folly near Bank tube station has a gorgeous interior and vibe. Gaucho in the centre of London is amazing for a steak, and The London Particular at New Cross is great for breakfast—and healthy. If you fancy going out of town, The Marquis at Alkham near Dover has a delicious degustation.
