L Ambre-des-Merveilles

WEEKEND INSPIRATION

L'amour in a bottle

Hermès fragrances - they're a mysterious and sensual experience. Poetic stories.
I have always been a fan of Hermès perfumes - you can see it in my bathroom. My all time favourite being un Jardin sur le Nil and my last obsession Voyage d'Hermès which - truth be told - my man uses more frequently than I am.
Hermès just announced the launch of a new perfumed story -  L’Ambre des Merveilles. I could not describe its composition better than Jean-Claude Ellena himself, in-House perfumer of Hermès. See the interview with him below.

... I'm in love.

INTERVIEW

JEAN-CLAUDE ELLENA, WHY L’AMBRE DES MERVEILLES AFTER L’EAU, L’EAU CLAIRE AND L’ELIXIR DES MERVEILLES?

L’Eau des Merveilles is a strong enough theme to be extended into a cycle, to take root in an olfactory story featuring amber and its different expressions. With L’Eau des Merveilles, we hoped to express a wilful, woody, non floral femininity. With L’Elixir, I wanted a tantalizing, mouth-watering composition. With L’Eau Claire, I was looking for clarity, transparency and lightness. With Ambre, the woman becomes sensual and mysterious. For this new chapter,
I wanted to relate one of the mysteries of amber, hovering between a delicious treat and sensuality, where vanilla meets the warmth of labdanum, and the moist quality of patchouli.

THE WORD “AMBER” FUELS FANTASIES BUT, DEEP DOWN, WE DON’T REALLY KNOW WHAT IT MEANS. WHAT IS AMBER IN PERFUMERY?

– It’s full of mystique! And gives us an insight into how customs have evolved. First there is natural amber, known as “ambergris”; it’s an intestinal concretion produced by sperm whales. It was sometimes thrown away and sometimes kept when whales were carved up after a whale hunt. So natural amber already brings with it a whole imaginary world of heroes who lived “in the belly of the beast” and escaped. Miraculous survivors from the prophet Jonah to Pinocchio!

This type of amber has a very discreet, refined, subtle smell, it’s not at all heady, a smell of the sea, the ocean, and of shag tobacco. It was even once used in cooking to flavour sauces for meat and fish, like Tonkin musk, which has a smell of iron and blood. There was a time when the smell of blood (and even of putrefaction) was thought a good smell! Nowadays we’re afraid of it, we reject it.

BUT STILL, WE LOVE THE SMELL OF AMBER MORE THAN EVER!
– And that’s where the power of words comes in, the virtues of semantic acrobatics, and our power of association through colour... Because the word amber means not only the animal concretion but also a fossil vegetal resin. This resin, which has no smell, is a sunny, golden, honey colour, and preserves anything it surrounds for tens of millions of years. Perfumes singled out with the word “amber” no longer contain amber in the first sense of the word, but a composition produced from a marriage of Chemistry with Nature that dates back to the end of the Nineteenth Century. Perfumers combined a synthetic substance, vanillin which is white, with a natural substance, labdanum which is dark brown resin from the Cistus plant: one of very few vegetal sources that contains animal notes… This
marriage produced a honey-coloured child: an olfactory convention that was given the name amber! Because of its colour, of course, but also and more importantly because its warm, enveloping, almost aphrodisiac and narcotic smell was a hallmark for the current passion for all things oriental.

AND IS IT TO EVOKE THIS IMAGINARY WORLD THAT THE FAMOUS BOTTLE HAS EVOLVED?
 – Yes, for Ambre the famous “wobble-bottle” of the Merveilles series has become even more precious and mysterious. It is decked in a wide ring of gold which circles its circumference, brings out the magnifying-glass effect of the ball of glass, and magnifies the shower of stars on the flat surface.
