Selfridges celebrates the wonderfully wacky English culture with The Big British Bang, a mash-up of British culture, history and tradition, from iconic products to eccentric fashion

This year Selfridges celebrates more than summer fashion. To mark 2012 which promises to be the most memorable year of the new millennium Selfridges embarkes on a journey through British etiquette, humour, customs, fashion, art, sports, foodculture and launches the biggest display of retail theatre of its 103-year history. Especially popular with London’s ladies in the 1930s, the store’s legendary rooftop has been re-opened for the summer and Selfridges has been transformed into a creative playground for all that is GREAT in Britain.

The Big British Shop will tempt you with products from fashion to food,  irresistibly loaded with British character, especially created for Selfridges by some of the most iconic British brands. From Mulberry with a Union Jack-embellished version of its Bayswater hit bag, to Rupert Sanderson’s red white and blue strap heels or Nicholas Kirkwood’s crazy pearly queen six-inch heels,  Selfridges’ Big British Shop will serve you a quintessential British shopping experience.

The tradition of British afternoon tea is revamped Selfridges’ style with the launch of The Big British Tea Party, serving ‘the highest tea on Oxford Street’ from a tea shop on the London store’s rooftop (daily from 12pm to 6pm from 31 May until 2 September).

Brits dress to please themselves and have little time for concern about what others think. Selfridges relives the essence of style from the time of the Queen’s coronation with a special fashion exhibition, created by experimental exhibition-maker Judith Clark who will take you on a journey through the post-war years through to contemporary fashion in Britain. The recreated fashion pieces include a collection of 50s fashion-forward looks including cinched waists, Capri pants, corset-free structured tops, sophisticated skirts and dazzling dresses.
And if that's not enough to fuel your excitement for summer London this year, Selfridges will equip you with the one and only urban survival backpack. A series of 10 backpacks that have been designed exclusively for Selfridges by brands such as Anya Hindmarch, Vivienne Westwood, Paul Smith as well as Philip Lim 3.1. The  must-have item for every fashionista living in London this year!

WHEN: 4th May to September 2012
