Hip venues for Afternoon Tea in London

So now I’m in my 30’s and the days of bar crawls are behind me my current entertainment of choice is Afternoon Tea.  Being a Londoner I certainly live in the right city and have managed to sample more than my fair share of afternoon tea menus across the city.  It has moved on from being just something nice to do with the girls after a hard day’s shopping to becoming a battle between the top hotels for the most inventive menus.  In fact the last time I went for tea was on a date with my husband and there were 3 other groups of men, all in business suits presumably cutting deals over their patisserie selection!  It has also become a must do on every discerning tourists itinerary so the best venues are now booked out months in advance.

The classics like the Ritz and Dorchester Hotel are still popular but here are my top 3 favourites that offer something a little more….

For the hardcore shopper

Every fashionista worth their salt will love Pret a Portea at the Berkley hotel.  Just a hop and a skip away from Harrods and Harvey Nics you can put your feet up and enjoy an afternoon treat fit for the catwalk.  They create their menu around the season’s fashion collections so you can try a Louboutain  spike heel biscuit and a Victoria Beckham white mousse skirt.  The menu changes every 6 months to keep up with the latest fashion trends so there’s always an excuse to keep going back!  The vibe there is cool and sophisticated and it always feels like a special occasion.

Prêt-à-Portea at the Berkley Hotel is inspired by the themes and colours of the fashion world. The menu is transformed every six months to follow the changing seasons in fashion. To make a reservation for Prêt-à-Portea call 020 7235 6000.

For a date with a difference

I treated my husband to Gentleman’s Tea at the hip hangout Soho Sanctum hotel for his last birthday and he loved it!  They offer two menus - gents afternoon tea and high tea for high heels which kept us both happy.  Having been for tea before he always felt a little out of place with the delicate teacups and mini pastries but this experience was less afternoon tea and more afternoon meat and carb fest.  When his plate came it was piled high with seared steak, mini burgers and smoked salmon bagels and not a finger sandwich in sight!  As it was his birthday we upgraded to include a tankard of Jack Daniels and a Cuban cigar to smoke on the roof terrace so a happier birthday boy you could not find.

For something a little different

One of my absolute favourites is the mad hatter’s tea party at the chic Sanderson hotel just off Oxford Street.  You really feel transported to another place with napkins printed with riddles, marshmallow mushrooms and even specially designed crockery.  If the sun is shining you can sit in the courtyard garden which feels a world away from hectic Oxford Street.
