The Met Gala: New York's Hottest Fashion Event Of The Year

It's that time of year again when celebrities and industry elite flock to designer showrooms to prepare themselves for the biggest fashion event of the year, The Met's Costume Institute Gala.

The Met Gala, beyond any other red carpet, is when real haute couture comes off the runway and into reality. It is an occasion where attendees dress, not to impress the general public, but for their fashion peers who hold each other to the highest of standards. Guests make riskier choices than they might for other events, trying to attain that perfect paparazzi photo on the Met's dramatic, if challenging, red carpet. Some may remember that last year Beyoncé had to be carried up these very steps because of how tight her gown was.

This year, for the first time, the Met Gala will be streaming live online and viewers can tweet questions for Vogue contributor William Norwich and model Elettra Wiedemann to ask celebrities by including the hashtag #metquestions. Vogue.com, MetMuseum.org, and Amazon.com will all be hosting the live stream as celebrities, designers, and models enter the museum on May 7 from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm. Notable guests will include Anna Wintour, Muccia Prada, whose designs are currently on exhibit at the Met, Carey Mulligan, who is hosting the event, and this year's rumored Met Gala performer Azealia Banks, who will be attending as designer Alexander Wang's date. For those who are more interested in the exhibit Schiaparelli and Prada: Impossible Conversations, the Met’s website, besides streaming the red carpet, will provide additional content and information about the exhibit, including interviews with the curators Andrew Bolton and Harold Koda. Whereas for those who are more fashion inclined, a list of designers and what dates they’re bringing on the big night has already surfaced on the internet. Balmain designer Olivier Rousteing will be bringing model Joan Smalls, Joseph Altuzarra will attend with it-girl of the moment Lana Del Ray, Haider Ackermann will be with Constance Jablonski, and Coco Rocha will attend with her husband in vintage Givenchy. Season after season, the Met Gala consistently delivers the most impressive, awe-inspiring creations in couture, along with some of the biggest fashion guffaws, and this year seems poised once again to deliver on both counts.
